ॐ ऋषिरुवाच ॥१॥

English MeaningThe sage said:
मन्त्र 2
निशुम्भं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं प्राणसंमितम् ।
हन्यमानं बलं चैव शुम्भः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥२॥
niśumbhaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā bhrātaraṃ prāṇasaṃmitam | hanyamānaṃ balaṃ caiva śumbhaḥ kruddho'bravīdvacaḥ ||2||
English MeaningSeeing Nishumbha, his brother, who was dear as his own life, slain, and his army being killed, Shumbha, enraged, spoke these words.
हिन्दी भावार्थअपने प्राणों के समान प्रिय भाई निशुम्भ को मरा और अपनी सेना को नष्ट होते देखकर क्रुद्ध शुम्भ ने यह वचन कहा।
मन्त्र 3
बलावलेपाद् दुष्टे त्वं मा दुर्गे गर्वमावह ।
अन्यासां बलमाश्रित्य युध्यसे यातिमानिनी ॥३॥
balāvalepād duṣṭe tvaṃ mā durge garvamāvaha | anyāsāṃ balamāśritya yudhyase yātimāninī ||3||
English MeaningO wicked Durgā, do not cherish pride based on the arrogance of your power! You, who are excessively conceited, fight by relying on the strength of others.
हिन्दी भावार्थहे दुर्गे! बल के गर्व से दुष्ट हुई तुम अभिमान मत करो; तुम दूसरी देवियों के बल का आश्रय लेकर युद्ध कर रही हो।
मन्त्र 4

English MeaningThe Goddess said:

मन्त्र 5
एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा ।
पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः ॥५॥
ekaivāhaṃ jagatyatra dvitīyā kā mamāparā | paśyaitā duṣṭa mayyeva viśantyo madvibhūtayaḥ ||5||
English Meaning'I am indeed the only one here in this world; who else is there, a second one, apart from me? O wicked one, behold these, my manifestations (vibhūtayaḥ), entering into me alone!'
हिन्दी भावार्थदेवी बोलीं—इस जगत् में मैं ही अकेली हूँ; मेरे अतिरिक्त दूसरी कौन है? दुष्ट! देख, ये मेरी विभूतियाँ मुझमें ही प्रवेश कर रही हैं।
मन्त्र 6
ततः समस्तास्ता देव्यो ब्रह्माणीप्रमुखा लयम् ।
तस्या देव्यास्तनौ जग्मुरेकावासीत्तदाम्बिका ॥६॥
tataḥ samastāstā devyo brahmāṇīpramukhā layam | tasyā devyāstanau jagmurekāvāsīttadāmbikā ||6||
English Meaning'Then, all those goddesses, headed by Brahmāṇī, merged and were absorbed into the body of that Goddess (Devī). At that time, Ambikā alone remained.'
हिन्दी भावार्थतब ब्रह्माणी आदि समस्त देवियाँ अम्बिका के शरीर में विलीन हो गयीं और केवल अम्बिका ही रह गयीं।

अहं विभूत्या बहुभिरिह रूपैर्यदास्थिता ।
तत्संहृतं मयैकैव तिष्ठाम्याजौ स्थिरो भव ॥८॥
ahaṃ vibhūtyā bahubhiriha rūpairyadāsthitā | satsaṃhṛtaṃ mayaikaiva tiṣṭhāmyājau sthiro bhava ||8||
English Meaning'When I am established here in many forms through my (divine) power (vibhūti), and when that (multitude) is withdrawn by me alone, I remain as one in battle. Therefore, be firm!'
हिन्दी भावार्थदेवी बोलीं—अपनी ऐश्वर्यशक्ति से मैं अनेक रूपों में यहाँ स्थित थी; अब सबको समेटकर अकेली खड़ी हूँ। तुम युद्ध में स्थिर हो जाओ।
मन्त्र 9

ततः प्रववृते युद्धं देव्याः शुम्भस्य चोभयोः ।
पश्यतां सर्वदेवानामसुराणां च दारुणम् ॥१०॥
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ devyāḥ śumbhasya cobhayoḥ | paśyatāṃ sarvadevānāmasurāṇāṃ ca dāruṇam ||10||
English MeaningThen, a dreadful battle commenced between the Goddess and Shumbha, witnessed by all the gods and asuras.
हिन्दी भावार्थऋषि बोले—तब सभी देवताओं और असुरों के देखते-देखते देवी और शुम्भ के बीच भयंकर युद्ध आरम्भ हुआ।
मन्त्र 11
शरवर्षैः शितैः शस्त्रैस्तथा चास्त्रैः सुदारुणैः ।
तयोर्युद्धमभूद् भूयः सर्वलोकभयङ्करम् ॥११॥
śaravarṣaiḥ śitaiḥ śastraistathā cāstraiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ | tayoryuddhamabhūd bhūyaḥ sarvalokabhayaṅkaram ||11||
English MeaningWith showers of arrows, sharp weapons, and likewise, extremely dreadful missiles, their battle became even more terrifying to all the worlds.
हिन्दी भावार्थतीखे बाणों, भयंकर शस्त्रों और अस्त्रों से उन दोनों का युद्ध पुनः समस्त लोकों को भयभीत करने वाला हुआ।
मन्त्र 12
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शतशो मुमुचे यान्यथाम्बिका ।
बभञ्ज तानि दैत्येन्द्रस्तत्प्रतीघातकर्तृभिः ॥१२॥
divyānyastrāṇi śataśo mumuce yānyathāmbikā | babhañja tāni daityendrastatpratīghātakartṛbhiḥ ||12||
English MeaningThen, the divine missiles that Ambika released by hundreds, the lord of demons (Shumbha) shattered those very missiles with his counter-attacking weapons.
हिन्दी भावार्थदैत्यराज द्वारा छोड़े गए सैकड़ों दिव्य अस्त्रों को परमेश्वरी देवी ने सहज ही हुंकार से निष्फल कर दिया।
मन्त्र 13
मुक्तानि तेन चास्त्राणि दिव्यानि परमेश्वरी ।
बभञ्ज लीलयैवोग्रहुङ्कारोच्चारणादिभिः ॥१३॥
muktāni tena cāstrāṇi divyāni parameśvarī | babhañja līlayaivograhuṅkāroccāraṇādibhiḥ ||13||
English MeaningAnd the divine missiles released by him (Shumbha), the Supreme Goddess shattered them with great ease (līlā), simply by uttering fierce roars (huṅkāra) and similar sounds.
हिन्दी भावार्थतब असुर ने सैकड़ों बाणों से देवी को ढक दिया; क्रुद्ध देवी ने अपने बाणों से उन बाणों को काट दिया।
मन्त्र 14
ततः शरशतैर्देवीमाच्छादयत सोऽसुरः ।
सा च तत्कुपिता देवी धनुश्चिच्छेद चेषुभिः ॥१४॥
tataḥ śaraśatairdevīmācchādayata so'suraḥ | sā ca tatkupitā devī dhanuściccheda ceṣubhiḥ ||14||
English MeaningThen, that asura covered the Goddess (devī) with hundreds of arrows. Angered by this, the Goddess (devī) then cut his bow with her own arrows.
हिन्दी भावार्थशुम्भ ने अपना श्रेष्ठ धनुष और बाण उठाकर चण्डिका को मारा; देवी ने उसके धनुष को तुरंत काट दिया।
मन्त्र 15
छिन्ने धनुषि दैत्येन्द्रस्तथा शक्तिमथाददे ।
चिच्छेद देवी चक्रेण तामप्यस्य करे स्थिताम् ॥१५॥
chinne dhanuṣi daityendrastathā śaktimathādade | ciccheda devī cakreṇa tāmapyasya kare sthitām ||15||
English MeaningWhen his bow was severed, the lord of demons (daityendra) then took up a spear (śakti). With her discus, the Goddess (devī) severed that too, even while it was in his hand.
हिन्दी भावार्थधनुष कट जाने पर दैत्यराज ने शक्ति उठाई, किन्तु देवी ने उसे हाथ में आते ही चक्र से काट डाला।
मन्त्र 16
ततः खड्गमुपादाय शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् ।
अभ्यधावत्तदा देवीं दैत्यानामधिपेश्वरः ॥१६॥
tataḥ khaḍgamupādāya śatacandraṃ ca bhānumat | abhyadhāvattadā devīṃ daityānāmadhipeśvaraḥ ||16||
English MeaningThen, taking up a sword (khaḍga) adorned with a hundred (moon-like) discs and shining brightly, the chief lord of the demons (daityānām adhipeśvaraḥ) rushed towards the Goddess (devī).
हिन्दी भावार्थफिर उसने तलवार और सौ चन्द्रों से अंकित चमकीली ढाल लेकर देवी की ओर दौड़ लगाई।
मन्त्र 17
तस्यापतत एवाशु खड्गं चिच्छेद चण्डिका ।
धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैर्बाणैश्चर्म चार्ककरामलम् ॥१७॥
tasyāpatata evāśu khaḍgaṃ ciccheda caṇḍikā | dhanurmuktaiḥ śitairbāṇaiścarma cārkakarāmalam ||17||
English MeaningAs he swiftly rushed forward, Caṇḍikā immediately severed his sword. She also cut his shield, which was as bright and pure as the sun's rays, with sharp arrows released from her bow.
हिन्दी भावार्थउसे आते देखकर चण्डिका ने तीखे बाणों से उसकी सूर्यकिरणों समान चमकती तलवार और निर्मल ढाल काट दी।
मन्त्र 18
अश्वांश्च पातयामास रथं सारथिना सह ।
हताश्वः स तदा दैत्यश्छिन्नधान्वा विसारथिः ।
जग्राह मुद्गरं घोरमम्बिकानिधनोद्यतः ॥१८॥
aśvāṃśca pātayāmāsa rathaṃ sārathinā saha | hatāśvaḥ sa tadā daityaśchinnadhānvā visārathiḥ | jagrāha mudgaraṃ ghoramambikānidhanodyataḥ ||18||
English MeaningShe struck down the horses, along with the chariot and its charioteer. Then, that demon, whose horses were slain, whose bow was broken, and who was without a charioteer, seized a dreadful mace, ready to slay Ambikā.
हिन्दी भावार्थघोड़े, सारथि और धनुष नष्ट हो जाने पर दैत्य ने भयंकर मुद्गर उठाकर देवी को मारने का प्रयास किया।
मन्त्र 19
चिच्छेदापततस्तस्य मुद्गरं निशितैः शरैः ।
तथापि सोऽभ्यधावत्तां मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगवान् ॥१९॥
cicchedāpatatastasya mudgaraṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ | tathāpi so'bhyadhāvattāṃ muṣṭimudyamya vegavān ||19||
English MeaningShe severed his mace as it came towards her, using sharp arrows. Even so, he, full of speed, rushed towards her, raising his fist.
हिन्दी भावार्थउसे मुद्गर सहित आते देखकर देवी ने तीखे बाणों से मुद्गर काट दिया; तब वह मुट्ठी तानकर दौड़ा।
मन्त्र 20
स मुष्टिं पातयामास हृदये दैत्यपुङ्गवः ।
देव्यास्तं चापि सा देवी तलेनोरस्यताडयत् ॥२०॥
sa muṣṭiṃ pātayāmāsa hṛdaye daityapuṅgavaḥ | devyāstaṃ cāpi sā devī talenorasyatāḍayat ||20||
English MeaningThat chief among demons struck her heart with his fist. And the Goddess, in turn, struck him on the chest with her palm.
हिन्दी भावार्थदैत्यराज ने अपनी मुट्ठी देवी के हृदय पर मारी और देवी ने भी अपनी हथेली से उसकी छाती पर प्रहार किया।
मन्त्र 21
तलप्रहाराभिहतो निपपात महीतले ।
स दैत्यराजः सहसा पुनरेव तथोत्थितः ॥२१॥
talaprahārābhihato nipapāta mahītale | sa daityarājaḥ sahasā punareva tathotthitaḥ ||21||
English MeaningStruck by the blow of her palm, he fell to the ground. That king of demons then suddenly rose up again, just as before.
हिन्दी भावार्थदेवी के थप्पड़ से घायल दैत्यराज भूमि पर गिरा, पर तुरंत फिर उठ खड़ा हुआ।
मन्त्र 22
उत्पत्य च प्रगृह्योच्चैर्देवीं गगनमास्थितः ।
तत्रापि सा निराधारा युयुधे तेन चण्डिका ॥२२॥
utpatya ca pragṛhyoccairdevīṃ gaganamāsthitaḥ | tatrāpi sā nirādhārā yuyudhe tena caṇḍikā ||22||
English MeaningHaving leaped up and seized the goddess, he positioned himself high in the sky. Even there, unsupported, Caṇḍikā fought with him.
हिन्दी भावार्थउसने देवी को पकड़कर ऊपर छलाँग लगाई और आकाश में पहुँच गया; वहाँ भी चण्डिका बिना किसी आधार के उससे लड़ीं।
मन्त्र 23
नियुद्धं खे तदा दैत्यश्चण्डिका च परस्परम् ।
चक्रतुः प्रथमं सिद्धमुनिविस्मयकारकम् ॥२३॥
niyuddhaṃ khe tadā daityaścaṇḍikā ca parasparam | cakratuḥ prathamaṃ siddhamunivismayakārakam ||23||
English MeaningThen, in the sky, the demon and Caṇḍikā engaged in mutual close combat, which initially caused astonishment to the Siddhas and Munis.
हिन्दी भावार्थतब सिद्ध और मुनि विस्मित होकर आकाश में देवी और शुम्भ का वह युद्ध देखते रहे।
मन्त्र 24
ततो नियुद्धं सुचिरं कृत्वा तेनाम्बिका सह ।
उत्पात्य भ्रामयामास चिक्षेप धरणीतले ॥२४॥
tato niyuddhaṃ suciraṃ kṛtvā tenāmbikā saha | utpātya bhrāmayāmāsa cikṣepa dharaṇītale ||24||
English MeaningThen, Ambikā, having fought him in a wrestling match for a long time, lifted him, spun him around, and threw him onto the surface of the earth.
हिन्दी भावार्थदैत्यराज से बहुत समय तक बाहुयुद्ध करके अम्बिका ने उसे उठाकर घुमाया और पृथ्वी पर फेंक दिया।
मन्त्र 25
स क्षिप्तो धरणीं प्राप्य मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगितः ।
अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा चण्डिकानिधनेच्छया ॥२५॥
sa kṣipto dharaṇīṃ prāpya muṣṭimudyamya vegitaḥ | abhyadhāvata duṣṭātmā caṇḍikānidhanecchayā ||25||
English MeaningThat demon with an evil soul (ātman), having been thrown and landed on the earth, furiously raised his fist and rushed forward with the desire to destroy Caṇḍikā.
हिन्दी भावार्थभूमि पर गिरते ही वह दुष्ट फिर उठकर मुट्ठी ताने चण्डिका को मारने के लिए वेग से दौड़ा।
मन्त्र 26
तमायान्तं ततो देवी सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरम् ।
जगत्यां पातयामास भित्त्वा शूलेन वक्षसि ॥२६॥
tamāyāntaṃ tato devī sarvadaityajaneśvaram | jagatyāṃ pātayāmāsa bhittvā śūlena vakṣasi ||26||
English MeaningThen, as the lord of all demons was approaching, the Goddess pierced him in the chest with her spear and made him fall upon the earth.
हिन्दी भावार्थसमस्त दैत्यजाति के उस स्वामी को आते देखकर देवी ने शूल से उसकी छाती भेदकर उसे पृथ्वी पर गिरा दिया।
मन्त्र 27
स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां देवीशूलाग्रविक्षतः ।
चालयन् सकलां पृथ्वीं साब्धिद्वीपां सपर्वताम् ॥२७॥
sa gatāsuḥ papātorvyāṃ devīśūlāgravikṣataḥ | cālayan sakalāṃ pṛthvīṃ sābdhidvīpāṃ saparvatām ||27||
English MeaningLifeless, and wounded by the tip of the Goddess's spear, he fell upon the earth, shaking the entire world with its oceans, islands, and mountains.
हिन्दी भावार्थदेवी के शूल से विदीर्ण होकर उसका प्राण निकल गया; गिरते समय उसने समुद्र, द्वीप और पर्वतों सहित पृथ्वी को कम्पित कर दिया।
मन्त्र 28
ततः प्रसन्नमखिलं हते तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि ।
जगत्स्वास्थ्यमतीवाप निर्मलं चाभवन्नभः ॥२८॥
tataḥ prasannamakhilaṃ hate tasmin durātmani | jagatsvāsthyamatīvāpa nirmalaṃ cābhavannabhaḥ ||28||
English MeaningThen, when that evil-minded demon was killed, the entire world became tranquil and attained great well-being, and the sky became clear.
हिन्दी भावार्थउस दुरात्मा के मारे जाने पर समस्त जगत् प्रसन्न और पूर्णतः स्वस्थ हो गया तथा आकाश निर्मल हो उठा।
मन्त्र 29
उत्पातमेघाः सोल्का ये प्रागासंस्ते शमं ययुः ।
सरितो मार्गवाहिन्यस्तथासंस्तत्र पातिते ॥२९॥
utpātameghāḥ solkā ye prāgāsaṃste śamaṃ yayuḥ | sarito mārgavāhinyastathāsaṃstatra pātite ||29||
English MeaningThe ominous clouds accompanied by meteors, which had appeared before, then subsided. The rivers also flowed in their proper courses when he was slain.
हिन्दी भावार्थपहले जो उत्पातसूचक मेघ और उल्काएँ दिखती थीं वे शांत हो गयीं, और उसके मारे जाने पर नदियाँ अपने मार्ग में बहने लगीं।
मन्त्र 30
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भमानसाः ।
बभूवुर्निहते तस्मिन् गन्धर्वा ललितं जगुः ॥३०॥
tato devagaṇāḥ sarve harṣanirbhamānasāḥ | babhūvurnihate tasmin gandharvā lalitaṃ jaguḥ ||30||
English MeaningThen, all the hosts of gods became filled with joy upon his slaying. The Gandharvas sang melodiously.
हिन्दी भावार्थउसके मारे जाने पर देवताओं के मन हर्षित हुए और गन्धर्व मधुर गान करने लगे।
मन्त्र 31
अवादयंस्तथैवान्ये ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः ।
ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभोऽभूद्दिवाकरः । ॥३१॥
avādayaṃstathaivānye nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ | vavuḥ puṇyāstathā vātāḥ suprabho'bhūddivākaraḥ | ||31||
English MeaningSome others played musical instruments and hosts of celestial nymphs danced; pure winds began to blow and the sun became exceedingly brilliant.
हिन्दी भावार्थअन्य गन्धर्व वाद्य बजाने लगे, अप्सराएँ नृत्य करने लगीं, पवित्र वायु चली और सूर्य अत्यन्त प्रकाशमान हो गया।
मन्त्र 32
जज्वलुश्चाग्नयः शान्ताः शान्ता दिग्जनितस्वनाः ॥३२॥
jajvaluścāgnayaḥ śāntāḥ śāntā digjanitasvanāḥ ||32||
English MeaningThe sacred fires blazed peacefully, and the ominous sounds that had arisen in the directions became tranquil.
हिन्दी भावार्थशांत अग्नियाँ प्रज्वलित हो उठीं और दिशाओं में उत्पन्न भयंकर शब्द शांत हो गए।

English MeaningThus ends the tenth chapter, entitled “The Slaying of Śumbha,” in the Devī Māhātmya of the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, during the period of Sāvarṇi Manu.
